DNV GL presents DSIC with world’s first AiP for LNG-fuelled VLCC design

DNV GL has presented Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company Limited (DSIC) with an Approval in Principle (AiP) certificate for a new LNG-fuelled very large crude carrier (VLCC) design at the first day of the Marintec China trade fair. The new, innovative design has been found to comply with the Gas Fuelled notation as given in the DNV GL rules for the classification of ships and the recently adopted IGF Code.

LNG as fuel for inland water vessels – New LNG Masterplan safety studies available

LNG as a ship fuel holds great potential for shipping to increase operational efficiency, while reducing its environmental impact – especially in the inland navigation sector. The LNG Masterplan safety studies, performed by DNV GL, were initiated by the Pro Danube Management and the Port of Rotterdam in collaboration with more than 50 companies and stakeholders as part of the EU funded project LNG Masterplan for Rhine-Main-Danube. The recently published studies focus on the technical, safety and operational risk aspects of LNG bunkering, as well as LNG loading and unloading.

Seatrade Award for DNV GL classed Ampere, world’s first fully electric vessel

Ampere, the world’s first large fully electric vessel, has received the Seatrade Clean Shipping award for 2015. Owned and operated by Norled and designed and constructed by Fjellstrand, the DNV GL classed car ferry is a fully battery driven catamaran made of aluminium. Innovative not only in its propulsion system but in its highly efficient hull design the 80 metre long vessel is able to carry 120 cars and 360 passengers across the Sognefjord between the villages of Lavik and Oppedal in Norway.

Naming of UASC containership Barzan sees first vessel with DNV GL’s new GAS READY class notation hit the water

Barzan, the first in a series of six 18,800 TEU container vessels ordered by UASC, was recently named at Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI) in Mokpo, South Korea. The vessel is the first to receive classification society DNV GL’s new GAS READY notation. Her five sister ships, as well as eleven 15,000 TEU vessels of UASC’s newest eco-ship generation, will be given the GAS READY notation as well.
