Xinhua Hospital in Shanghai launches project to achieve DNV International Accreditation

In May, the Jinglang International Medical Department at Xinhua Hospital, in affiliation with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, successfully took the first steps in a project toward meeting the requirements of the DNV International Accreditation Standard (DIAS).

The project marks a milestone in achieving broader standardization of international medical services and is an important step towards enhancing the Xinhua Hospital’s quality management system and meeting the needs of patients within an internationally recognized framework.

DNV International Accreditation Standard (DIAS)

The DNV International Accreditation Standard (DIAS) is a framework that integrates clinical and patient safety requirements with ISO 9001 quality management system principles, and it is designed to be effective in any healthcare system. Originating from DNV’s NIAHO® framework of quality management standards for US healthcare systems, DIAS was initially developed to meet the approval requirements of the US Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). DIAS has evolved over decades to become applicable worldwide. It now serves as a crucial element for the seamless integration of international healthcare services across different regions. DIAS is widely accepted in countries such as Iceland, Slovenia, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Brazil, and Thailand, serving as the benchmark for hospital accreditation. Additionally, DIAS has gained extensive recognition from international commercial health insurers. It provides a strong foundation for these countries to be destinations for patients seeking foreign medical care.

Importance of international medical care

To achieve desired health outcomes, patients may sometimes be best served by seeking medical care in countries not their own. This may be due to a lack of specialist care providers, to cost of services, or to other motivators. Shanghai, China’s economic, cultural, and technological hub, is a growing medical hub for international patients, and the demand is growing. The official start of Xinhua Hospital’s journey to achieving DNV DIAS accreditation highlights Shanghai's ongoing efforts to become a leading international destination for medical care.
