Live-PED CE - Pressure Equipment Directive

Products intended for use under inner pressure

CE Marking

CE Marking is legal requirement for the manufacturer before placing Pressure Equipment on the market or putting into service in the EEA  (European Economic Area).

CE Mark permits the free movement of Pressure Equipment within the EEA and ensures the Pressure Equipment to comply with essential safety requirements spelled out in directives.

Download and utilize our PED Categorization Tool to determine the PED Category of a given pressure equipment.

Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) Scope

PED applies to the design, manufacture and conformity assessment of pressure equipment and assemblies with a maximum allowable pressure greater than 0.5 barg. Pressure equipment is classified as any of the following;
  • Vessels
  • Fired or heated Pressure Equipment
  • Piping
  • Safety accessories
  • Pressure accessories

How are Pressure Equipment assessed?

Pressure Equipment are assessed based on PED category which results from the following design conditions;
  • Internal volume or diameter
  • Maximum allowable working pressure
  • Fluid state: gas or liquid
  • Fluid hazardous level: 1 or 2
  • Maximum design temperature

Using the design factors and PED tables results in one of 4 PED categories: I, II, III or IV. The manufacturer can select the appropriate conformity assessment modules in Annex II which dictate how the product requirements are met. For Categories II, III and IV Notified body authorization and approval is required.

What are the Essential Safety Requirements (ESR)?

Pressure Equipment covered by the directive shall satisfy the essential safety requirements set out in Annex I of the directive. Annex I entails the following;

1.0    General
2.0    Design
3.0    Manufacturing
4.0    Materials
5.0    Fired or heated equipment
6.0    Piping
7.0    Specific Quantitative requirements for certain pressure equipment
