DNV GL supports the shipping industry in a digital world
Accessing new solutions, services, and collaborating at the touch of button are 21s century expectations. With the My DNV GL portal, DNV GL is supporting clients and the market through today’s digital transformation.
People spend more time online today than ever before. This makes sense when you consider many of the ways the internet influences decision making in our personal lives.
Online individuals have immediate access to everything from bank accounts, to booking a ride or a room from the sharing economy. Even deciding what restaurant to go to for dinner has been revolutionized in the digital age. A Pew Research Center survey found that 21% of Americans report being online “almost constantly”. At DNV GL, we recognize the shift to digitalization and seek out new ways to enhance our services and increase the shipping industry’s access to information using digital means.
Today, DNV GL customers and the public have access to an online tool with the power to drive smart decision making and influence operations through My DNV GL.
My DNV GL (my.dnvgl.com) is the access point for digital interaction with DNV GL. This portal provides access to a host of applications (apps) and services, as well as a full overview of ongoing projects all in a single dashboard. My DNV GL can be customized to meet an individual’s needs no matter their role or organization. This means a ship manager can easily manage a vessel in the same portal where a shipyard or designer will oversee the approval of a new building project.
The industry responds
My DNV GL offers easy access to several proprietary apps beneficial to users. In fact, 9 out of every 10 individuals polled recognize the value and “believe that it makes their job easier”.
Clients find that the portal improves the process for requesting surveys and preparing for surveyor attendance. “[It is] easy to create survey requests. The confirmation sent after the survey request is generated is good and informative. [It provides] a good overview of due dates on certificates and memos and the corrective actions,” Says Kjetil Opshaug, Fleet Manager at Intership AS. Using the My DNV GL portal to request a survey results in the issuance of survey preparation notes and supports crews in preparing for surveys well in advance. As-a-result, surveys are carried out faster and more efficiently. Completing them in a single visit translates to huge cost savings for the client.
The ambition
When asked recently about the long term intentions for My DNV GL, Albrecht Grell, Vice President, Director of Digital Solutions & Innovations, responded: “We aim for My DNV GL to be the an open online platform where the maritime industry meets, collaborates and shares knowledge and ideas. We are continuously working to improve the content available and brainstorming ideas and concepts for apps with industry and our clients. We are keen to see the portal develop in ways that will bring the most value and look forward to seeing growth in number of users in the future.”
New apps are continuously added to the portal for both DNV GL customers and the public. While specific client focused apps are available for DNV GL customers, many others, such as the Cyber Security Self-Assessment and the Energy Efficiency Design Index Calculator, are available to all registered users.
Current and future developments: Preparing for MRV (Monitoring Reporting and Verification)
DNV GL develops and maintains apps in support of operators staying ahead of changing market and regulatory conditions. As the European Commission moves to bring emissions from shipping into its 2009 climate and energy package, DNV GL responded in part by developing apps to benefit operators, including the MRV Readiness Check. Focused on the new EU regulations which comes into effect 1 January 2018, this app provides shipping companies with a fast gap analysis between their monitoring and reporting of CO2 emissions and the requirements of the MRV. “MRV Readiness Check is the first step for shipping companies to assess how their monitoring plan stacks up to the EU requirements.” noted Jan Hagen Andersen, DNV GL Business Development Manager. He continued, “In addition to the MRV Readiness check, we are introducing a free app on My DNV GL to generate a ship specific monitoring plan which can be submitted for verification ahead of the August 2017 deadline.”
Current and future developments: Digital Signatures
The value of My DNV GL is also boosted by DNV GL’s issuance of documents containing electronic signatures. “With electronic signatures, published survey statements are available immediately upon completion of the survey to the ship and the manager’s office,” said Herman DeJong, DNV GL Regional QHSE & Production Manager and Regional Chief Surveyor. He added, “This move makes it easy for clients to share documents with stakeholders such as charterers, Port States, flag administrations, insurance and ships. The locked documents are verified through an online authentication assuring its origination.” Through My DNV GL, survey reports and selected forms are issued with electronic signature complying with the IMO guidelines for electronic signatures (FAL.5/Circ.39).
