The event is well-attended by naval architects, marine engineers, university faculty, students, and other oil & gas industry professionals. Over the years, the Offshore Symposium has earned its name and importance among the offshore activities in Houston.

David McKay, Director of Projects and Regional Offshore Chief Surveyor, DNV North America

Mr. McKay holds a Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. He started his career in the design office of Govan Shipbuilders in Glasgow in 1985, and joined DNV in 1990, spending 5 years working as a surveyor on fixed platforms in the North Sea. He relocated to Houston in 1996 and has worked on newbuilding projects and offshore units in operation since. David has been an employee-elected member of the Board of Directors of DNV in 2006, 2011, 2015, and from 2019 to 2023. David works as Director of Projects for major projects in North America, as well as acting as a key account manager supporting drilling contractors, and also holds a role as regional chief surveyor for Offshore North America. David obtained certification as a Project Management Professional from the Project Management Institute in 2018. In his spare time David enjoys promoting recreational boating safety to the local community through membership in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Piotr Szalewski, Sr. Principal Engineer - Manager, Houston Approval Center

Mr. Szalewski has over twenty years of professional experience in Maritime and Offshore industries, combining deep theoretical and practical experience of Naval Architecture, Structural Design and Advanced Structural Analysis with Project Management, People Management and Technical Leadership. He worked in Europe, Asia and Americas, and was involved in Class Design Approval, Regulatory Reviews, Technical Advisory, Rule Development and Failure Investigations of offshore floaters and maritime ships. His experience is a blend of detailed design and high level perspective covering entire project and complete asset lifecycle. Piotr has also developed and taught multiple training courses and webinars on structural design, structural analysis and related software applications.
