Additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, is another potential game changer in shipping. Not only can AM result in new designs for more efficient machinery components, it could also allow spare parts to be produced locally around the world. This shortens the time required for repairs and contributes to more efficient ship operations.

To examine the potential of additive manufacturing for our customers, we have carried out a feasibility study and a pilot study on 3D-printed products in the maritime and offshore industries – with very promising results. Based on these studies, we have developed a new classification guideline for the approval of 3D-printed products, which is released in November 2017.

DNV also offers approval and certification services for AM processes as well as for 3D-printed products.
