DNV GL announces global Solar + Storage services to help the industry meet challenges of integrating technologies and grid interconnection

DNV GL’s independent engineering, testing and technology reviews span solar, storage and combined applications to support market deployment

DNV GL, the world’s largest resource of independent energy experts and certification body, today announces its global Solar + Storage services to support project developers, independent power producers, financiers, utilities and component manufacturers in deploying these combined technologies in the energy market.

DNV GL provides independent advice, analysis, engineering and testing services to the global Photovoltaic (PV), wind, grid transmission & distribution markets and is among the first entities to evaluate and test storage technologies and applications that integrate renewable generation, while enhancing grid reliability and operations.

DNV GL’s recent global survey, “Beyond Integration: Three dynamics reshaping renewables and the grid,” showed that more than 60% of energy industry respondents identify energy storage as one of the top three factors for integrating a higher share of renewables into the grid.

A combined approach to solar PV plant development with energy storage is expected to become increasingly common. Increased renewables penetration, a more flexible energy delivery system and improvements in customer delivery models are some of the stakeholder benefits driving market dynamics in combining solar and storage applications.

“Enabling these technologies to work together as a system and connect to the grid is not without challenges,” said Ray Hudson, Director at DNV GL for Solar Services. “A comprehensive understanding of the risks, technologies and best practices is key to unlocking the full potential of these combined applications.”

DNV GL offers a wide range of services to all stakeholders seeking qualified guidance and risk mitigation in addressing the emerging opportunities created by the convergence of solar and storage, including:

  • independent and owners engineering
  • product testing
  • technology reviews (bankability studies)
  • modeling and valuation
  • product lab and field testing
  • and utility grid integration.

Having already provided services to several utilities, component manufacturers, government agencies and project developers on combined deployments in the Americas and Europe, DNV GL is now focused to further reduce risks and accelerate technology and project commercialization in this emerging market.

As the world’s leading independent renewable energy consultancy and certification body, DNV GL brings decades of market, application and technology expertise to these projects. The DNV GL team includes recognized experts in solar technology, solar PV plant design, independent and owner’s engineering, storage technology, testing and grid integration. The company also has solar and battery testing facilities in the United States and Europe.

“Our expertise brings a unique perspective to all stakeholders, and we are well positioned to help accelerate the commercialization of qualified financed projects and products,” said Hudson.

Intersolar Europe
DNV GL participates at Intersolar Europe, a leading conference and exhibition for the solar industry and its partners, that takes place June 9-12, 2015 in Munich. DNV GL’s activities at Intersolar Europe:
