Digitalization in the maritime industry

DATE − Direct Access to Technical Experts

To answer customer questions in the most professional way and in the shortest possible time, we have developed DATE (Direct Access to Technical Experts). High quality standards, 24/7 availability and short response times play a major role and are key to our success. Machine learning is constantly improving the process, as it can be used to vet cases based on historical data and quickly directs them to the right expert.

Electronic certificates

DNV GL has implemented IMO-compliant electronic class and statutory certificates across its entire fleet. The widespread use of electronic certificates gives rise to significant efficiency gains for ship owners, charterers, regulators and crew, cutting administrative burdens, processing time and document handling costs.

Certificates are published on the DNV GL customer portal immediately after completion of an on-board survey, so that all the relevant parties can access the latest certificates from anywhere in the world. The electronic certificates are secured with a digital signature and a unique tracking number (UTN), which can be checked online, assuring their validity and authenticity.

Smart Survey Booking

Smart Survey Booking (SSB) is another step towards a more cost-efficient way of interacting with class and operating ships. This digitalized survey booking process helps customers to manage their survey requirements more efficiently. By combining surveys at the most appropriate time and location for each vessel and operational schedule, ship managers can save time and, ultimately, money.

Remote survey for fleet in service

All DNV GL-classed vessels have the possibility to be surveyed remotely, allowing for faster and more efficient inspections for selected surveys, saving time and expenses. By using an online connection or video streaming link, a dedicated team of remote surveyors can provide support to vessels anywhere in the world. Access to the remote survey service is easily available through the My Fleet portal on the Veracity platform.

Remote survey for certification of materials and components

Many CMC surveys, for which we are currently travelling to our customers, may be carried out remotely with digital aids. This provides manufacturers with higher flexibility when performing inspections and acceptance tests and save travelling costs. Our customers can easily book remote surveys via the portal for certification and verification of components and material in MyServices on Veracity.

Smarter survey methods

One of the most important ways we work to keep shipping safe is by conducting annual surveys on all vessels in DNV GL class. Adaptation of new technologies is improving the efficiency of surveys and eliminating human safety issues whilst reducing costs. Large cargo holds and tanks can now be inspected visually with the aid of camera-equipped drones, no longer requiring cost and time-intensive staging or rafting.

For selected surveys, a remote approach significantly reduces travelling costs and operational disruptions. Remote technology is enabling eyes to see the object of inspection from virtually anywhere in the world. Equipped with something as simple as a smartphone app, personnel on board can connect to the surveyor on land.

Furthermore, we will introduce condition-based surveys to match the wider use of condition-based maintenance schemes in addition to barrier management, as a new way to manage the safety status of a ship.

Cyber security

Owing to the increasing complexity of the digital systems of vessels as well as new safety risks for the system, crew and passengers, it is essential to establish adequate and correctly implemented cyber security barriers. Effective cyber security is built on three pillars: people, processes and technology. DNV GL has compiled and published a recommended practice (RP), which details the principles and processes that underpin effective cyber risk management. This provides an authoritative resource for operators of any ship type who wish to build their own cyber risk management system.

DNV GL also provides third-party verification of cyber security requirements throughout the newbuild project lifecycle. Based on these experiences, DNV GL has developed its first class notations covering cyber resilience. The Cyber Secure notations have three qualifiers: Basic, Advanced and “+”.

To cater for the need to make staff and crew aware of cyber security risks, DNV GL has expanded its options for training through its Maritime Academy. Courses cover cyber security from both management and technical angles and even include lessons in hacking, to give participants an insight into how cyber attackers operate.

Software for smarter vessel operation

DNV GL also supports customers in smarter vessel operations, management and ship design through a broad suite of software solutions addressing ship and fleet performance, regulatory and environmental compliance, and crew management.

Ship management, operations and ship design software

DNV GL’s Veracity industry data platform is designed to help companies improve data quality and manage the ownership, security, sharing and use of data. By creating frictionless connections between data owners and users, the platform will create new opportunities to improve ship performance and safety at the same time as reducing operational costs. Veracity also acts as a marketplace for our digital services. It is a single point of access to many of our digital applications, designed to support customers in areas such as fleet management, newbuild processes, PSC inspections, cyber security preparedness, and regulatory and environmental compliance.
