Session 1 Discovering the Value of NIHSS and the Modified Rankin Scale in the Stroke Patient

This session will review how the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) and the Modified Rankin Scale (mRS) relate to the stroke patient. This session is designed to expand the knowledge of the NIHSS and the mRS as they relate to the DNV standards. The session will include a review of the components and scoring system of both the NIHSS and mRS. The presenter will highlight common areas of challenge in meeting the DNV standards related to these scores. 

Learning Objectives: 

  1. Discuss the specific elements that comprise the NIHSS. 
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the components that are utilized to determine the mRS. 
  3. Identify clinician requirements and education needs to be eligible to complete the NIHSS and mRS. 
  4. Describe ways to utilize the NIHSS and mRS to evaluate patient progress.
